What’s the process like?

01 Consultation & site analysis

At our initial consultation, we’ll discuss your wants and needs in depth, and I’ll ask you questions that will help us both get a clear vision and facilitate our starting point for your project.

I'll then schedule a site visit to measure, photograph, and assess existing conditions, including structures, sun and other climatic exposures, soil type and quality, drainage, and other relevant factors. This analysis will reveal opportunities and constraints that will inform your landscape plans. Using this information, I'll create a base map of your property, serving as the foundation for a conceptual landscape design.

02 landscape drawings & renderings

Some clients only need landscape plans to move ahead with a design, others want additional renderings to envision the space. Once we’ve agreed on the scope of work, you’ll receive a design proposal and estimate, then we sign a work agreement. If you don’t want a full design but still want some extra help (like a planting list or help with rebate application), I can tailor the work to your specific needs. Once we have a work agreement in place, I will develop landscape plans that depict the primary hardscape (paths, seating, and other built elements) and plant elements. We then meet to review the design concept, discuss direction, and share preferences.

03 plant lists & rebates

You may only want a well-researched plant list suited to the specific conditions of your site. My knowledge of horticulture and plant water requirements means you will get a list with specimens that will not only look beautiful, but will perform well in your landscape.

And if you're considering replacing your lawn with a more cost-effective and climate-appropriate garden, you may qualify for a rebate from your water agency's Lawn Replacement Program. To be eligible, your new landscape plan must meet all application requirements and receive pre-approval prior to renovation.

04 maintenance

Finally, your new landscape will look good upon installation, great 6 months later, and amazing one year in. I encourage clients to arrange for immediate maintenance to ensure proper upkeep, including pruning, weeding, irrigation monitoring, and general oversight. Typically, new gardens require 1-2 monthly visits for the first year.

For gardens with mostly native plants, specialized maintenance may be necessary, such as hand pruning versus hedge trimming and tailored watering schedules to promote year-round beauty. I can create an easy-to-follow maintenance guide to help you, your gardener or maintenance crew maintain your garden's health and beauty.
